Jebel Ali factory gutted : Thick black smoke from a raging fire in an oil factory could be seen from afar in Dubai. The fire at the Jebel Ali factory, situated in an industrial area off Sheikh Zayed Road and surrounded by other factories, had proved a headache for civil defence workers to fight as the flammable material kept reigniting and was causing multiple explosions, Dubai Civil Defence Assistant Director Ahmad Obaid Al Sayegh said. Firefighters were still working to extinguish the fire on night, but had it under control by about 8pm, he said. There were no casualties reported and Al Sayegh said it was fortunate it occurred as there were very few people in the factory at the time of the fire. The Police Operations Room received an emergency call about the fire about 3pm , with civil defence crews from Al Barsha, Al Quoz, Al Karama, Al Manara and Jebel Ali rushing to the site, along with ambulances and police patrol. Once they arrived, they discovered the fire had spread quickly due to the explosive substances inside. Emergency workers cordoned the factory off to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and began fighting it from all four sides of the factory, but Al Sayegh said it proved very difficult to bring under control. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear but the scene would be handed over to police forensic experts to determine the cause once the cooling operation was complete, he said.
