Jeet Kune Do is the martial art of Bruce Lee. Even though it can be taught, its not technically a style because its not based on a specific way of doing something. Its a philosophy on how to go about approaching martial arts as a whole. When Bruce was alive, the origins of JKD (Jeet Kune Do) were called Jun Fan Gung Fu in the early to mid 60s. This started as a style with specific movements from the core arts of fencing, western boxing, and wing chun kung fu. But, as Bruce progressed, he saw that his style was too limited winning a fight against a rival kung fu stylist, but being severly winded from the altercation. He took to studying the most up to date methods of sports-related conditioning and combining the best methods of east and west fighting techniques and approaches. He realized that the minute one created a way, one created a limitation. For Bruce, he wanted to use all ways and means to serve an end. From there, he created the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. Jeet means stop or intercept, kune means fist, and do means way: Way of the intercepting fist. This he took from a technique in fencing called the stop hit. The idea was that the minute an opponent would advance on him, he would attack his opponents attack with an attack of his own, and jam him. From there, he could flow into other techniques to put forward pressure on him, and then finish him off. Unlike the traditional masters of the martial arts, Bruce created JKD to be the most scientific of all martial arts and some even classify it as scientific streetfighting because like physics, it considers that the quickest route from one point to another is a straight line. So, therefore, it was based on using the most powerful and quickest movements that resulted in the most damaging and disabling effects, using the least amount of wasted movement, wasted energy, while leaving one the least vulnerable in the execution of a technique.
