Jefferson Community College students get extra credit for hearing me read about anarchism, and review my work. “The writings ranged from light hearted to serious matters, but it was the passion that these talented writers possessed about not only writing, but their topics that personally left me amazed. The writings seemed to be about topics of importance to these authors and it put into perspective the way that writing is truly a form of expression. Though all of the writings were great, my personal favorite was the one written by Clarissa Rogers, entitled “Measuring Distance.” Though this was probably one of the more lengthy ones, to me it was one that was most relatable as well as the most touching. …It was beautiful to see and hear the emotion being felt by the author… She spoke of Dan so solemnly and used a tone that seemed very nostalgic, almost as if she were reliving each moment as she told her story. It was very unique how she chose to incorporate the audio of the Eminem song that Dan loved so much in the beginning and over all, she was my personal favorite. The North Country Writers Festival Evening Coffeehouse Reading was an extremely pleasurable experience. It was great to see each author bring alive their work and express themselves as well as their beliefs, values, and opinions through their writings.” Genny Wise, Dr. Grimes’ English 101 “The last reader was Clarissa Rogers and she read her essay Measuring Distance. This was my favorite reading, I loved how she spoke and how she described her different measurements of distance. When it changed to her friendship with Dan, I liked how she continued to write her thoughts and it was like we could feel their friendship grow through the reading. … it looked like she had started to cry,…I felt like I was going to cry as well. Overall, I enjoyed the readings and I was glad to have made the trip out.” Elizabeth Skaggs, Dr. Grimes’ English 101 “I laughed; I cried. I was blown away by the talent of the authors and orators; the winners of the North Country Writer’s Festival: Nicholas P. J. Dephtereos, Corey M. Pentoney, Chris L. Brock, and Clarissa Rogers, among others. These amazing writers read their winning pieces on Thursday evening, October 30 for the NCWF Coffeehouse Reading, in the JCC Student Lounge. Ms. Rogers made me feel deeply and brought me to tears with her personal essay Measuring Distance. Kudos and bravo to an extraordinary writer for sharing this. In closing, I would like to thank those who bring their time and talents to the art of the written word and to those who make the North Country Writers Festival a possibility and a reality.” Julie Ebbrecht, Dr. Grimes’ Creative Writing
