Jefferson County History Center 172 Main Street, Brookville | 849-0077 Book Signing Event The authors of two new books about Jefferson County people will sign copies at the Jefferson County History Center on Friday evening, November 28, 2014 between 5pm and 8pm. Copies of the two books are available in the gift shop. Kate Scott: Did She or Didnt She; by Carole A. Briggs This new book by Carole A. Briggs documents the life and work of Jefferson Countys eminent historian, as well as the life of Calvin A. Craig, rumored to have been a dear acquaintance, and the life of Osborn Oldroyd, a collector of Lincoln memorabilia. According to another book by Neff and Guttridge, Dark Union, Kate provided a deposition to Oldroyd on October 10, 1910 during which she claimed to be the mother of a daughter by John Wilkes Booth. It also notes that Booth, instead of dying at the hands of the Union Army after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, actually survived and subsequently escaped to India. The publication also documents Kates involvement in the reform movements of the 19th century, veterans organizations, the formation of the Pennsylvania Memorial Home, and her writing. Endnotes document the sources of information, so readers may draw their own conclusions about Neff and Guttridges claim. The 300+ page book includes illustrations and an appendix, and is indexed. The Scripture Rocks: Why Douglas Stahlman Carved his Legacy in Stone; by Brian L Fritz and Kenneth Burkett Local legends abound about the mysterious carved Bible rocks frequently encountered in the wooded hillsides around Brookville, Pennsylvania. Over the past 6 years, volunteers from the Jefferson County History Center and North Fork Chapter 29 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology have undertaken an extensive quest to relocate, map and record the Scripture Rocks, and learn the true facts about the man who carved them. This book is intended to be a historically accurate account of Douglas Stahlmans life and to preserve a record of his work without bias for or against his religious convictions and his chosen life style. Included is a transcription of Stahlmans personal book, The Dedicated Rocks, and many of his inscriptions that are preserved in stone. The soft-cover book of 250 pages includes illustrations, an index, and endnotes.
