Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore today announced plans to improve 10th Street – a major commercial corridor in the city. The improvements include widening the street and adding turning lanes. “Now is the time to revitalize and upgrade 10th Street,” said Moore who is a former business owner along the street. “Improving this major thoroughfare will accommodate increased traffic to River Ridge and other businesses along the way.” The design phase of the nearly $17 million project is complete. The next phase will be to acquire right-of-way for the widening. The Indiana Department of Transportation is paying for 80% of the costs related to the design and right-of-way purchases. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2016, which will include new sidewalks, landscaping and lightening. The City is still pursuing state funding for the construction portion of the project, but Moore said he is committed to using City dollars to complete 10th Street if necessary. “While we still hope for help from the State to pay for the construction, we have the cash on hand to make this project a reality. Improving this corridor is vital to our economic future,” said Moore. “Our city is quickly growing with more development on the horizon once the East End Bridge is open. Improving 10th Street is both an important infrastructure and economic development project that will tie into that future growth.” Moore said he has directed his Department of Planning and Zoning to begin a review and update of the City’s master plan. The plan will include a special emphasis on the 10th Street corridor for zoning and development purposes. “With the construction of two new bridges now underway and the development of River Ridge ahead of schedule, we must have a comprehensive plan that will guide future growth in our city. It’s been nearly a decade since this has been done and our city has grown as a result of annexation in the last few years,” said Moore who hopes the plan to be complete within two years. “Now is the time to revisit that issue. The plan will include the entire City, but 10th Street must be an integral part of that plan.” The revitalization of 10th Street is the last of five projects Moore has unveiled over the past couple months as part of the administration’s “Pathway 2 Progress” initiative. “We’ve outlined a plan to make Jeffersonville a better to place to live and raise a family. These five projects will are essential to shaping the future of our City.”
