Jeffrey Polsky pits it very well...better n most! ...I did not refer to Republicans or all Republicans; I referred to the extremists who have succeeded in hijacking the Republican Party. Importantly, I will observe that an affordable health-care act, like the Massachusetts health reform law Republican Willard Romney signed into law, is a Republican, economically sound solution to an enormous fiscal crisis. It is not about deciding what health care a person will or will not receive; it is about deciding how the public monies already being spent will be spent in the future, because right now everyone is losing. The greediest, most self-interested Republican and even tea partiot should be even favor of such reform. Why? Because in this country we do not deny emergency medical care to people, and so many people are uncovered and in need of care that they do so on emergency bases, and we all pay for it--over and over and over again. And we do not pay for it simply by paying for their hospital bills; we pay for it over and over again in our own medical bills, hospital bills, and insurances. Even the staunchest of Republican physicians I know--and I know my share--who ought twice-over be against such an act--once as a Republican, a second time as a physician about to see his income reduced--is in favor of such an act because it is so economically sound. The problem with the current act as written is that it does not go far enough; it leaves too many excluded, and leaves too big a gap of avoidable risk.
