Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd: Save the Dolphins PSA Jennifer Aniston, Woody Harrelson, Paul Rudd, Ben Stiller, Robin Williams are some of the celebrities featured in this clip promoting the end of dolphin hunting in Japan. This PSA was inspired by Louie Psihoyos’ Academy Award-winning documentary The Cove, which focuses on the massacre of dolphins in the Japanese fishing town of Taiji. Dolphins are not only better looking, but I have no doubt they’re also more intelligent, more compassionate, and have a higher sense of ethics than most human beings out there. Surely, they wouldn’t come up with wrong-headed objections to the slaughter of their fellow animals. For instance, some people will say that traditions and cultural differences need to be respected. Dolphins have been hunted in Taiji for generations, therefore local fishermen should be allowed to perpetuate their bloody practices. Imagine if we were to preserve (or restore) every single age-old tradition no matter how brutal or unethical just because they’ve been (or were) around for a long time. As for comparing the slaughter of dolphins with the fate of chickens, pigs, cows, etc., the matter at hand isn’t necessarily about the species being killed, but about how those animals are being killed. The dolphins unlucky enough to find themselves near Taiji are herded into a shallow-water cove where they’re either clobbered to death or have their throats slit open. That would be deemed inhumane no matter where in the world you live; no matter which animal you’re killing. Additionally, dolphin meat is toxic, with high levels of mercury. It’s unhealthy for human beings to eat it. And finally, Taiji dolphins that aren’t slaughtered in the cove end up as aquarium or circus attractions elsewhere — when those beautiful, brilliant creatures should be living free.
