Jeremiah 51 Correction Doesn’t Mean Abandonment As the prophet continues declaration of the impending destruction of Babylon. The prophecy unveils much of what would happen when the Medes and Persians would become the battle ax against Babylon and how their demise would occur. This city which was about 55 miles in circumference, had walls over 320 feet high and 50 feet wide. It is said they would have chariot races on the walls. To have brought down this mighty city with its hanging gardens, relying on human understanding would have proved impossible. Yet it was taken down when the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers were dammed up, permitting the enemy to walk in on the dried river beds, they were defeated. The reasons for the severe judgment on Babylon, was in part due to the desecration of the sacred items taken by Nebuchadnezzar from the temple in Jerusalem and dedicated to the god Bel. Another reason was the pride that accompanied Babylon as they over ran nations and peoples, of which Israel and Judah were a part. At the beginning of this, the last chapter penned by Jeremiah, is an encouraging word in verse 5; For Israel is not forsaken, nor Judah, By his God, the Lord of hosts, Though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel. CORRECTION DOESNT MEAN ABANDONMENT! Israel and Judah deserved the judgment they brought upon themselves, yet Gods mercy kissed the judgment and He refused to abandon them. When we are confronted with conviction, respond, repent and return to the Lord; whereas condemnation will drive one further from the grace and mercy of the Lord. Unless there is a major turning to the Lord by the United States and other nations, correction that will be intense and severe will come. Yet even in the midst of what is coming, God will not abandon the U.S. As their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel, we see that in todays culture. Correction will come because God loves this nation. Yet He is not going to abandon nor forsake us. It may be that nationally, were beyond the point of no return. If that is the case, let us not grow weary in standing for righteousness, holiness and Gods eternal truth - His word! In such a state, the enemy will attempt to deceive and make one believe God has given up; yet that isnt the whole truth. An old hymn declares on Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, let that be our confession not only in song, but in our lifestyle.
