Jeremy Renner Set To Reboot “Sam Spade” For Universal It’s recently been confirmed that Jeremy Renner will star, and his production company The Combine will produce a reboot of the the classic SAM SPADE detective series for Universal. The project is being pitched as a modern day noir that will center on the private investigator “Sam Spade” made famous by the 1941 film “The Maltese Falcon.” With a planned modernization of the character, I wonder if we’ll be seeing a Renner akin to his role in “American Hustle” or something more along the lines of “The Bourne Legacy.” Whereas the fedora, trench coat, cigarette, and gravely voice (though not always associated with Sam Spade’s character) is the penultimate image of the dominate male in ’40s cinema, I wonder if the leather jacket, messy hair, and five-o-clock shadow is what men will be remembered for today. Either way, Renner has the look to carry the role for both generations, with an edge that makes you feel uneasy when watching him, and a caliber of attractiveness that’s slightly off (just like Bogart) that could authentically bring Spade back to the big screen.
