Jesus, John and the people (Part 2) Matthew 11:16-19 (also in Luke 7:29-35) Johns baptism was one of the symbols the Pharisees chose to reject. Their unreasonable determination not to change and opposition to each of Gods messengers is described as the selfishness of children, who become annoyed when others wont play their game. Jesus and John, when in confrontation with the Jewish leaders, refused to play their game and so are the object of their taunts. The people not only criticize, but exaggerate the habits both of John, calling his asceticism demonic, and of Jesus, calling His normal habits of food and drink gluttony and drunkenness. But the criticism runs at a still deeper level. If they had understood John, they would have understood Jesus, and vice-versa. They have both been critcized and rejected for the way they live. But wisdom, preeminently concerned about right living, has been vindicated by her actions: their respective lifestyles are both acknowledged. The saying probably means that those who respond to wisdom, prove its rightness. Glory to God! Amen!
