Jesus told us the story about a landowner who hired a bunch of workers to work in his vineyard. Some worked early in the morning and others came later, while there were others who came waaaay later in the day. To the early birds’ dismay, the ones who came late received the same wage as they did… a day’s wage. They felt they were treated unjustly for they worked all day in the vineyard while the others worked shorter. But there was no injustice in the story for they were given what was agreed upon. The landowner was simply generous and kind. Know that Jesus was teaching his disciple about the kingdom of heaven. In heaven we shall all receive the same reward. There is no such thing as early birds, isle seats, business class, gold members, platinum members, teacher’s pet, or a seat next to that stinking trash can. We shall all inherit the same divine presence, the same glory, the same eternal joy and peace. I will receive no less and no more than what you will receive and no less than what the early saints received for they too are basking in the same divine beauty. Remember the thief who asked Jesus to remember him in his kingdom? Compared to the disciples, didn’t he come right at the brink of death, almost too late? But Jesus assured him of a reward worthy of a saint for he offered him salvation. Some of us are fulltime workers in the vineyard of the Lord, as consecrated persons, as priests, nuns and brothers etc. Others are called to build a healthy, loving and Godly family. Some spend their lives as unmarried individuals dedicated to the service of others and God. Does it mean that priests will receive a different reward while everyone else will get something less? That doesn’t make sense, right? That’s not the kingdom of God. Do what God commissioned you to do and live the life Jesus showed us. There is no use in comparing what you and I are doing or how long we have been working. Just do His will. If you think that you will receive a better reward because you’ve been a Christian all your life while that person in the corner converted just recently… you are gravely mistaken. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about the reward. I would worry about whether I’m working at all or not. Be reminded, too, that God will not ask us how long we worked in his vineyard but how sincere and dedicated we were in our effort to love Him.
