Jesus’ message today is confusing at first; he tells us that he has not come to bring peace but to bring war? Jesus came in peace to reconcile us with a merciful God so how can this be? Jesus came to wage war on Satan. A spiritual war between good and evil, the darkness or absence of God’s love which drives sin. Unfortunately there are no neutral parties in this spiritual battle; we choose sides with every breath we take. We choose by our actions or our inactions whether we are walking in the light or in the darkness. The love of God challenges us to choose who will be first in our lives and whether we can take up the crosses caused by this choice and have faith in God. God help me carry my cross and walk with you rather than putting my cross on someone else or the ground so that I can live in an empty peace which in reality is darkness.
