“Jews Who Choose” 1 Corinthians 1: 1: “Paul ... and our brother Sosthenes.” We get the idea sometimes that all first century Jews were against the Church. Some were. As Jesus predicted, “They will put you out of the synagogue.” (John 16: 2) But in the beginning all believers were Jews, and in subsequent decades of the first century many Jews continued to come to the faith, including Sosthenes. St. Paul here calls him a brother, and we learn in Acts 18: 17 that he was the leader of the synagogue in Corinth, as was Crispus, another believer in the Lord. (Acts 18: 8) It is safe to assume that a leader of the synagogue was Jewish!
