Jews expect calamities this time every year, because so many tragedies happened in their history on the 9th of the month of Av. Sarah Tyler writes from the Galilee: "This is a very solemn time of year for the Jewish people. There are so many tragic events that have happened during the Jewish month of Av (means “Father”). Many of the events occurred on the 9th of Av. I’ve listed some of them below. There is another tragic event that is scheduled to take place during this month. Unless the Lord intervenes, on July 15 (the 8th of Av), the Jewish community of Amona in the Binyamin region (named for the Tribe of Benjamin) will be destroyed and the people who live there will be forced from their homes and land. This in the “pursuit of peace.” This morning, I spoke with a Jewish woman who made a comment that made me realize once again that intercession for the people of God is so needed – so much of an honor and high responsibility to accept. She said that during this time of year, the Jewish people “expect” bad things to happen. Based on history, they feel that it is their fate to go through major hardships during the month of Av. I told her that no matter what to just remember that the Lord God of Israel is with her and His people. He promises that He will never abandon or leave them. I also reminded her that the evil in this world is out to destroy this nation and people – not the Lord. The Lord has cut covenant with Israel and He is a covenant-keeping God. No one else, no man or false god, can make that claim. I also reminded her that because Av means Father, I believe the Lord uses this month to let His people know that His love is beyond all measure, beyond all comprehension, and beyond all circumstances. It is His heart to see His people come to Him, lean on Him, trust in Him, and live in Him to see their full inheritance come to pass, as a nation and as a people. Thank you for your continued prayers. Also please continue to pray for the Muslims during Ramadan. Because some of their clerics failed to see the crescent moon, fasting was postponed to begin today. Please pray that just because they didn’t see the moon, they will see the Son! May the Son always shine on you! Sarah ----- Events that have occurred during Av: Y The community of Gush Katif near Gaza was destroyed and evacuated of all Jewish citizens the day after Tisha B’Av in 2005 (5774 on the Hebrew calendar)…in the hopes that it would bring peace. Instead, it has brought nothing but a barrage of rocket fire from terrorists in Gaza on the various cities in the south of Israel…specifically Sderot, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ofakim, Netivot, and Be’er Sheva. Historical calamities for the Jewish people on Tisha B’Av (the 9th of Av): Y The First Temple built by King Solomon and the Kingdom of Judah was destroyed by the Babylonians led by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BCE after the siege in 587 and the Judaeans were sent into the Babylonian exile. Y The Second Temple built by Ezra and Nehemiah was destroyed by the Romans in August 70 CE (3830 AM), scattering the people of Judea and commencing the Jewish exile from the Holy Land. Y The Romans crushed Bar Kokhba’s revolt and destroyed the city of Betar, killing over 100,000 Jews, on July 8, 132 CE. Y The First Crusade officially commenced on August 15, 1096, killing 10,000 Jews in its first month and destroying Jewish communities in France and the Rhineland. A grand total of 1.2 million Jews were killed by this crusade that started on the 9th of Av. Y The Jews were expelled from Spain on July 31, 1492. Y On August 2, 1941, SS commander Heinrich Himmler formally received approval from the Nazi Party for “The Final Solution”. Almost 50% of the Jews on the face of the earth were captured and killed at that time. Y On the 9th of Av, 5702 (July 23, 1942), the mass deportation began of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto, en route to Treblinka.
