•Jigawa, Kano, Niger, Sokoto govs decline request •It’s party of the wicked – PDP From TAIWO AMODU, Abuja Last Wednesday’s registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the Independent National Electoral (INEC) may have created disaffection among the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors in the North-West, Daily Sun has learnt. It was revealed that the efforts of Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako to persuade his colleagues to dump the PDP and move to the new party has been rebuffed by Governors Sule Lamido, Babangida Aliyu, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Aliyu Wamakko, of Jigawa, Niger, Kano and Sokoto states respectively. The governors who have been having a running battle with the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led national leadership of the PDP have been involved in trouble-shooting across the country. They had in the last three weeks visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo and military leaders, Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalam Abubakar in Ogun and Niger states respectively. The governors also visited former President Shehu Shagari. The governors have equally been up in arms against President Goodluck Jonathan over his speculated second term ambition and the alleged role played by the Presidency in instigating the crisis in the Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF). A source disclosed that while Governor Nyako had canvassed defection to the new party which was registered last Wednesday, his colleagues had frowned against the idea, “but were of the opinion that the crisis in PDP isn’t beyond redemption and the party could still be salvaged.” The governors who were wary of the danger of moving into APC as late entrants, also argued that unlike the Nyako’s option, they should stay back in PDP and reclaim the party from Tukur and the Presidency. “Recall that ahead of APC registration, Governor Murtala Nyako’s supporters in Adamawa had moved en masse into the ANPP. “But I can tell you categorically that with the exception of Governor Nyako, none of the governors is willing to join the APC, they were reached by the party in that regards but you know these governors are not kids; they are old war horses who know that politics is a game of interests,” the source noted. The interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in his reaction, told Daily Sun on phone that he was not aware of the lobby to get the PDP governors’commitment to join the new party. “ I am not aware of what you are talking about. I am not aware at all”, Mohammed said.
