Jim Buxton, I have attached a list of recommended plants/shrubs/flowers to attract hummingbirds. From personal experience, trial and error mostly, we have planted and had good luck with Cape Honeysuckle, trailing lantana, Hibiscus, Mexican bird of paradise, Holyhocks, Aloe Vera (they love the sprouts/growths that bloom aprox twice a year.). This serves a dual purpose for sunburn relief when a guest using the pool doesnt apply sunscreen on a frequent basis. These same plants attract the most beautiful butterflies. We have orange, apple, nectarine, mandarine orange, lemon, peach trees which blossom extensively. The hummingbirds flutter around these trees but not sure if they drink from the blossoms. Likewise, the Gardenias, rose bushes, sage, spider plant, Palo Verde and cacti blooms all offer blooms that seem to attract bees the most, which are also necessary for pollination due to declining numbers. I like plants, trees, flowers that serve multiple purposes, the most important of which is to use our carbon dioxide and emit oxygen for us to breathe. They also love the sprinklers and gardening water system. My new project is studying what it entails to put up a bat house, the pros and cons, etc. With Terri Ella Owen
