Jim McIntosh and Katherine Wheatley © June 2013 Broken toys, red bottle caps Lost fishing buoys, bubble wrap All our other plastic crap They just drift away Cola, juice, lemonade Water bottles one-trip made No return, no deposit trade We throw them all away I sailed to Svalbaard to see Pristine shores and scenery My illusions were destroyed When I found my broken toys Silver Mylar party balloons Released while singing children’s tunes Rise and soar but someday soon Fall in a distant bay All our toys we’ve cast off for To toss on waves far from shore Swirl in gyres for evermore And never to decay I sailed to Svalbaard to see Pristine shores and scenery My illusions were destroyed When I found my broken toys Boozing guys drink and sing Throw away their 6 pack rings No concern where they may cling And so a turtle dies Kittywake and albatross Gorge on broken toys we tossed Feed their chicks our plastic dross Until their young bird dies I sailed to Svalbaard to see Pristine shores and scenery My illusions were destroyed When I found my broken toys Broken toys, red bottle caps Lost fishing buoys, bubble wrap All our other plastic crap They just don’t drift away
