Jim Valvano coached basketball for a few colleges but most notably North Carolina State University. He was, in my opinion, one of the greatest coaches of all time. When he was diagnosed with cancer he used his notoriety to become a spokesperson for cancer research. I remember watching him give this speech when he received the Arthur Ashe courage award at the espys. It was March 3, 1993, 3 days prior to my 16th birthday. I was moved to tears then and still get emotional every time I hear it. It is replayed every year as a kick off to Jimmy V week. It was originally, and remains, a poinient speech that encompassed living life to the fullest, not taking anything for granted, his fight against cancer, and the need for cancer research. I could write a book about all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions that I can relate to it. Amongst other things most of you know that cancer has touched my life with friends and family. Most recently by the passing of my uncle. In the speech he said dont give up, dont ever give up. This statement not only pertains to the fight against cancer but applies to everything you do, every day, every minute, every single second of your life.
