Jim Woody Woods posted this on Friends of Frank Pooler this AM. I love the backstory of this song. Franks youthful poem was picked up by Richard Carpenter, who set it to music. Karen sang the ballad to Richards accompaniment. It was my introduction to Frank at Saratoga Potsdam Choral Institute in the 1970s, the summer after the song came out. ================================== KOST 103.5’s morning DJ, Mark Wallengren does a segment each morning called, “Behind the Music” where he talks about the back story of a song. This morning’s BTM segment was about an 18 year of kid in Onalaska, Wisconsin, in the 1940’s, who wrote a song to a girl. 20 years later in the 1960’s when he was teaching at Cal State Long Beach, he gave the lyrics to a student who wrote new music. We all know the rest of the story. Enjoy.
