Joan Baez singing the song by The Band The Night They Drove Old - TopicsExpress

Joan Baez singing the song by The Band The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Joan had the hit with it. What a beautiful woman and such a clear expressive voice, I see why Dylan loved her. Interesting song for the tiimes it was created. A kind of a sympatric look at the southern cause which had maintaining the system of slavery as one reason of its justification for leaving the union. The song came out at a time of civil rights for blacks and other society changes that was going on at the time. Because the song had it’s birth from a generation that champion such societal changes, it made it all the more ironic. Had this song came out at the time of the souths defeat to the union then it would have been played as a reflection of the souths lost but instead it come out a hundred years later for us to relect on the historal aspect of the souths defeat and the crusing the pride for people who fought for that cause as flawed as it was.
