Joan Rivers says Palestinians ‘deserve to be dead’ in aggressive Gaza rant caught on camera Controversial ‘comedian’ Joan Rivers has found herself in hot water after saying Palestinians who have lost their lives in the Gaza conflict ‘deserve to be dead’. Speaking to a TMZ journalist on camera, the 81-year-old said: ‘You started it. You’re dead, you deserve to be dead.’ When told of the rising death toll among the Palestinian population, she said ‘good’, adding: ‘Who cares? ‘They were told to get out. They didn’t get out. You don’t get out, you are an idiot. ‘At least the ones that were killed were the ones with low IQs.’ The Gaza conflict has cost the lives of 1,886 Palestinians – including more than 400 children – and displaced over 520,000 Palestinians, according to the latest UN figures. In the wake of a huge backlash, Rivers quickly back-tracked, attempting to explain the comments by saying they were ‘totally taken out of context’. ‘What I said and stand behind is, war is hell and unfortunately civilians are victims of political conflicts,’ said the outspoken celebrity, who frequently makes light of her Jewish background and heritage in her shows and on-stage material. ‘We, the United States, certainly know this as 69 years later we still feel the guilt of Hiroshima and Nagasaki… Along with every other sane person in this world, I am praying for peace.’ This is not the first time Rivers has found herself in hot water. In 2013, she came under heavy criticism for repeatedly mocking Adele’s weight and refusing to apologise. A year later, Rivers said the victims of the Ariel Castro kidnapping – who were beaten, starved and repeatedly raped over a two-year period – ‘shouldn’t complain… one of them has a book deal’.
