Job Opportunities: OFFICE OF OMBUDSMAN NEEDS 360 LAWYERS The Office of the Ombudsman needs an additional 360 lawyers but has been strict in screening applicants as the agency puts premium on their competence and integrity in fulfilling the mandate of the agency. Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales told members of the House Committee on Appropriations chaired by Rep. Isidro Ungab (3rd District, Davao City) during the hearing on the Office of the Ombudsman’s proposed P1.73 billion budget for 2015, that the agency presently has 363 lawyers and needs 360 more lawyers. Asked by Rep. Gus Tambunting (2nd District, Parañaque City) why the agency cannot fill up the lawyer-positions, Morales said while there have been many applicants, the agency has been strict in checking their competence and integrity. “There are many applicants but we have to be very strict . You have to first pass competence and second integrity (tests). If you don’t pass both, I’m sorry, it’s better to have none than to have plenty who are not competent to discharge the mandate of the Office of the Ombudsman,” Morales said. Members of the appropriations committee agreed to support the Office of the Ombudsman’s request to restore or provide the office an additional budget of P160 million for the following: P10 million for confidential funds of the OMB-Central Office; P50 million for supplies and materials and professional services accounts for OMB-Luzon, OMB-Visayas, OMB-Mindanao, OMB-MOLEO and the Office of the Special Prosecutor; and P100 million for capital outlay for the construction of the OMB-Mindanao Building.
