Much of this work is conducted by the School of Marine Science & Engineering, with the provision of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Marine Biology, Marine Science and Civil & Coastal Engineering, and supported by state-of-the-art laboratories (including wave tanks), field equipment and ROVs, and a fleet of vessels (including a 14m research vessel Falcon Spirit). The University is also undertaking a GBP 4.65m redevelopment of its waterfront facility, due for completion in Summer 2014. The new Marine Station will provide modern teaching and research facilities, including classrooms, a wet laboratory, aquarium and equipment stores. Plymouth University is unique in providing students opportunity to undertake professional, HSE approved, SCUBA diver training and apply this technique to their academic studies. The School of Marine Science & Engineering is now seeking to appoint a full-time permanent Academic Diving Manager, based at the new Marine Station, to manage academic diving operations for undergraduate, postgraduate, research and business engagement activities within the school, supported by a professional diving team and technical staff. As an academic position, the post-holder will develop, deliver and assess undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the academic application of diving and associated techniques, fully integrated with existing degree courses within the university, and will provide academic supervision of student project work. You will also be expected to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research programme and/or pursue business engagement activity in a field related to the other activities within the school. You will have a postgraduate degree, preferably PhD, in a marine science or engineering subject and appropriate qualifications and experience to act as a supervisor of diving activity under the Diving at Work Regulations (1997). You will have proven organisational and interpersonal skills and previous management experience. The post requires flexible working, including occasional evenings, weekends and anti-social hours (e.g. night dives), and provides a generous annual leave allowance of 35 days (+ statutory holidays).
