Courtesy Cortland County Sheriffs Department Marathon, N.Y. -- A gun-wielding man stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry Friday from an antiques store in the village of Marathon, the Cortland County Sheriffs Department said. Just after noon Friday deputies and state troopers were called to River Bend Antiques, on Route 11, for a reported armed robbery. The sheriffs department said a man entered the antique store and chatted with an employee for a few minutes. Then the man pulled out a handgun and demanded the employee hand over jewelry from a display case. The man put the jewelry -- worth between $4,000 and $7,000 -- in a bag and left the store. He got into a full-size newer style gray extended cab, short box pickup-truck and fled south on Route 11, the sheriffs department said. No one was injured in the robbery. The robbery suspect is described as a white middle-aged man with a slender build standing about six feet tall. He has dark brown hair, short scruffy chin hair and was wearing a baseball cap. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact the Cortland County Sheriffs Department at 607-758-6151 or 607-753-3311.
