A former president of both the Associated Writing Programs (AWP) and the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines (CCLM), he served as Director of the Literature Program of the National Endowment for the Arts in the early 90s. He also had a great love for his family and for dogs. He was a wonderful man who was full of life. On his last day, he said, “I had a great run.” He was referring to his run around the neighborhood. However, this phrase can also be attributed to his life. He is survived by: the love of his life, Connie Bellamy; daughter, Lael Bellamy (Rich Barnard); his son, Sam Bellamy (Kristen Bellamy); grandchildren, Thomas Foster Barnard, Harrison Barnard, Elise Bellamy, Abby Bellamy; aunt, Dorothy Zutavern; and his four-legged companion, Tristan.
