Joe Stumpf posted: Replace the word “refer” with the word “introduce’. So in the future, when you’re about to say the word “refer,” stop and ask yourself, “How can I insert the word ‘introduce me’ where I was just about to put the word ‘refer me’?” You’re far better off asking for people to introduce you not refer you for a lot of reasons. Mostly because, there’s no image for the word refer. Try this: Close your eyes for a minute, and get a picture in your mind of someone referring you. There’s not an easy access to that image. However, if I say “Get a picture in your mind of someone introducing someone to you,” you can access that image a little easier. You can see a handshake happening, you can see an email passing, you see somebody walking up and introducing you, but refer is an ambiguous word. There’s not a picture for it. So the word introduce is a much more active and a much more imaginary word. So one dialogue would sound something like this, “My purpose is for you to be so outrageously happy with the help that I give you that you gladly introduce me…” (embed it,) “…introduce me to at least two people that you really care about before I even sell your home or help you get a loan. In fact, if you’re delighted with the help that I give you, then I’m going to ask you for the names of at least two people that you’re most eager to introduce me to so I can help them.
