Joe Wilson takes the wheel on air from 9am…and he’ll be talking about the leading criminal lawyer who’s suggested that only those who commit the most serious crimes should receive prison sentences. Professor Andrew Ashworth suggests that crimes which don’t involve threats or violence should be dealt with by using community service to make amends. Our jails are pretty much full, so it’d be one way to ease the pressure on the prison service…but if you’d been burgled, or had your property damaged – would YOU be happy at the thought of the perpetrator getting away with a few hours community service? Maybe you’re of the mind that, as long as they do something to make amends, then justice has been served…or perhaps you’d like to make sentences more strict and more of a punishment, to act as a deterrent from committing crimes in the first place. Should we seek to help offenders who commit low-level crimes…or should we crack down on criminals and show that such matters simply will not be tolerated? Should the victim have a say in the punishment handed out to those who’ve committed offences against them? Joe wants your thoughts…call 01254 583583, or leave your message here…
