Apostles who are given authority over a sphere which includes a number of churches, presumably in an apostolic network headed up by the apostle. Functional apostles. Apostles who are given authority over those who have an ongoing ministry in a certain specific sphere of service which has defined boundaries of participation. Apostolic Team Members. Apostles whose apostolic ministry functions in conjunction with an apostle who is seen as the leader of a team of one or more other peer-level vertical apostles. They may be assigned specific spheres by the leading apostle. These are more than administrators or assistants or armor-bearers. Congregational apostles. Apostles functioning as senior pastors of dynamic, growing churches of more than 700-800. Horizontal Apostles Apostles who have authority to call together on a regular basis peer-level leaders who minister in a defined field. Ambassadorial apostles. Apostles who have itinerant, frequently international, ministries of catalyzing and nurturing apostolic movements on a broad scale. Mobilizing apostles. Apostles who have the authority to take leadership in bringing together qualified leaders in the body of Christ for a specific cause or project. Territorial apostles. Apostles who have been given authority for leading a certain segment of the body of Christ in a given territorial sphere such as a city or state. Marketplace Apostles-I am not familiar enough with marketplace apostles to suggest sub categories. It seems clear that some marketplace apostles would be vertical (perhaps within a large company) while others would be horizontal (bringing together peer-level marketplace apostles). A quick review of the main offenses include: 1-Cultic origin, worship style, and goals 2-Emotionalism 3-Mysticism 4-Gnosticism 5-The IHOP dilemma 6-False Prophecies 7-Effective Denial of Sola Scriptura 8- by multiple Godly Christian Groups 9-Neglect of the word. The modern prophetic movement, instead of calling people to the scriptures, distracts them from the sure foundation into supposed revelations God is giving today 10-Misuse of the Word. Modern prophetic teachers are poor handlers of the bible playing fast and loose with the text in order to justify their doctrines. 11- Misguided activity. Instead of involving Christians in praying and laboring along in biblical means that God can truly bless, Christians are being led into a host of non-biblical activity. Jim Goll tells Christians they must discern the demonic enemies opposing them, then they are to bring them to the courtroom of heaven and lay out a reasoned case against these thieves. They are then to petition God for “the appropriate amount of compensation that is due to the same degree as the offense.” Then God punishes this demonic entity and blessings flow. 12- Exaltation of man. super apostles. They will do exploits greater than those in the book of Acts. God waits for man before He can act. 13- Frustration. What happens when the prophets are wrong? IN 2004, Kim Clement prophesied that Osama Ben Laden would be uncovered within 35 days. Chuck Pierce said when he was in Washington for the national day of prayer, God told him to ask for hailstones as a confirmation of the prophetic word, by the end of the day, the city wILL BE covered with hail. NOT 14- Neglect of Christ. in the writings and messages is a desire for power and signs. Jesus does not appear to be sought for who He is as God and Savior but for the power He can bring to the church. ERRORS THAT BOTH KCF AND VINEYARD HAD DISCOVERED PRIOR TO ERNIE’S REPORT AND HAD BEGUN TO CORRECT. 1- The lack of accountability for prophecies that do not come true or do not bear witness to the person receiving the ministry. The releasing of men to minister publicly in a teaching format who are not qualified as teachers. 2-The attempt by some prophetic ministers to establish doctrine or practice by revelation alone, apart from clear biblical support. 3-Dogmatic assertions in delivery of prophetic words. On several occasions revealing negative prophetic words in public without first confronting the individual. 4- Predictions concerning babies or marriages (except in cases of barrenness). 5-The conferring of governmental authority or staff positions on the individuals, as well as redirecting staff to different church locations without giving these words to the appropriate levels of leadership. 6-Giving prophetic words which affect a movement or church without going first to the appropriate levels of authority. 7- Public predictions of natural disasters, economic events, and divine visitations without the approval of government. 8-The use of prophetic gifting for controlling purposes. 9-Using types and allegories to establish doctrine. 10- Teaching or implying that KCF and Vineyard are an elite group or that we are the leaders of a new elite group about to be revealed by God. 11-Using jargon that reflects the teaching of groups that we do not wish to be identified with. 12-Calling John Wimber, or others, apostles and prophets verses (sic) using the terms “apostolic leadership” and “prophetic ministry.” 13-Manifesting an attitude of superiority through the possession of a secret body of information. Amos 3:7 is true, but the prophetic people are not to wear a garment of pride because of this knowledge.41 APOSTOLIC LEADERS Ché Ahn, Bob Beckett, Rice Broocks, Harold Caballeros, Emmanuele Cannistraci, Paul Daniel, Greg Dickow, Naomi Dowdy, John Eckhardt, Michael Fletcher, Bill Hamon, Jim Hodges, John Kelly, Lawrence Kennedy, Lawrence Khong, David Kwang-Shin Kim, Larry Kreider, Alan Langstaff, Roberts Liardon, Dexter Low, Mel Mullen, Alistair Petrie and Eddie Villanueva Brian McLaren-Tony Jones-Dan Kimball-Eddie Gibbs- Erwin McManus-Leonard Sweet-Stanley Grenz-John Franke-Stanley Hauerwas-Brad Kallenberg- Doug Pagitt-Nancy Murphy-Steve Chalke-LeRon Shults-Chris Seay-Spencer Burke-Rob Bell-Bill Dahl-Donald Miller ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Errors of the Emergent Movement In addition to all the above self-defeating claims of emergence, there are some other crucial doctrinal and practical errors. Here are some of them: Anti-Substitutionism Steve Chalke speaks of the Cross as “a form of cosmic child abuse” which contradicts the Bible’s claim that “God is love” and ‘makes a mockery of Jesus’ own teaching to love your enemies” (Steve Chalke, The Lost Message of Jesus, 182-183). Anti-Trinitarianism “I asked him if he believed that the Trinity represented three separate persons who are also one” (Donald Miller, Blue Like Jazz 202). Anti-depravity (Pelagianism) Some (like Chalke and Tomlinson) reject depravity. The former said, “Jesus believed in original goodness.” (The Lost Message of Jesus, 67). The latter said it is “biblically questionable, extreme, and profoundly unhelpful” (The Post-Evangelical, 126). Anti-Futurism (Amillennialism) It has an overemphasis on the present spiritual kingdom to the neglect of Jesus’ future literal kingdom—an overrealized eschatology. Anti-Vapitalism (Socialism) It has a social Gospel, not a spiritual Gospel with social implications. It adopts the agenda of the political left. Tony Jones said on David Chadwicks show that he and most of the Emergents he knew were voting for Barack Obama (6/22/08). Ecumenism The Emergent movement is a broad tent which includes numerous heresies (see above), embracing Catholicism, and even pantheism (by some). Spencer Burke said, “I am not sure I believe in God exclusively as a person anymore either…. I now incorporate a pantheistic view, which basically means that God is ‘in all,’ alongside my creedal view of God as Father, Son, and Spirit.” (A Heretics Guide to Eternity, 195). Difficulties with the Emergent Movement There are many difficulties with the Emergent movement. Here are some of the main ones: 1. Its central claims are all self-defeating. 2. It stands on the pinnacle of its own absolute and relativizes everything else. 3. It is an unorthodox creedal attack on orthodox creeds. 4. It attacks modernism in the culture but is an example of postmodernism in the church. 5. In an attempt to reach the culture it capitulates to the culture. 6. In trying to be geared to the times, it is no longer anchored to the Rock. 7. It is not an emerging church; it is really a submerging church. the signs that your church is targeted for a Purpose Driven Church format: 1. Change in music to a contemporary rock style. 2. Removal of hymn books; eliminating the choir. 3. Replacement of organ and piano with heavy metal instruments. 4. Repetitive singing of praise lyrics. 5. Dressing down to casual and informal attire. 6. Eliminating of business meetings, church committees, council of elders, board of deacons, etc. 7. The pastor, or a new leader with a few assistants, usually four, takes charge of all church business. 8. A repetitive 40-day Purpose Driven Church study program stressing psychological relationships with each other, the community, or the world, begins. 9. Funded budgeted programs are abandoned, or ignored, with ambiguous financial reports made. 10. Sunday morning, evening, and/or Wednesday prayer meetings are changed to other times; some may even be eliminated. 11. Sunday School teachers are moved to different classes, or replaced by new teachers more sympathetic with the changes being implemented. 12. The name Sunday School is dropped and classes are given new names. 13. Crosses and other traditional Christian symbols may be moved from both the inside and outside of the church buildings. The pulpit may also be removed. 14. In accordance with Dr. Warren’s instructions, new version Bibles are used; or only verses flashed on a screen are referenced during regular services. 15. Purpose Driven Church films, purchased from Saddleback, precede or are used during regular services. 16. The decor, the carpets, may be changed to eliminate any resemblance to the former church. 17. The word church is often taken from the name of the church, and the church may be called a campus. Denominational names may also be removed. 18. An emphasis on more fun and party sessions for the youth. 19. Elimination of altar calls or salvation invitations at the close of the services. 20. The elimination of such words as unsaved, lost, sin, Hell, Heaven and other Gospel verities from the pastor’s messages. 21. The reclassification of the saved and lost to the churched and the unchurched. 22. The marginalizing, or ostracizing, of all who are not avid promoters of the new Purpose Driven Program. 23. Closed meetings between the pastor or chosen staff members without any reports made to the general membership.
