Johann Sebatian Bach (1685 - 1750) was born in Thuringia, Germany. He was taught to play violin and harpsichord by his father, but later became a church organist and church composer. The Sonata in A Minor is also entitled Suite in A Minor. Suites are instrumental works typically in multi - movements and modeled after dances. This suite has four movements. The first movement is called Allemande, which is a 17th and 18th - century German folk dance, comprised of one dance step with arms interlaced. Corrente, the second movement, is an old 17th century French dance, which is characterized by a running glide in a feel of three. The third movement, a slow Sarabande, was originally a Spanish dance that became popular in France. The last movement, Bourree Anglaise, is considered a lively English country dance. This work is dedicated to my grandmother, who loves the music of J. S. Bach. I performed this work on my Senior Recital on Saturday, April 26th 2014 at 1 pm.
