Johannesburg - Gauteng police commissioner Lesetja Mothiba will brief the media on Tuesday on the recent spate of shopping mall robberies in the province. On Monday night, a robbery at a cellphone store at the Glen shopping centre in Ormonde, Johannesburg, was the sixth robbery of shop in a mall in the past two months. The suspects stole cellphones and fled the scene, said Captain Doniah Mothutsane. Since November last year, the malls Samsung, iStore, and Vodacom shops have been robbed. A Telkom store at the Kolonade mall in Montana, Pretoria, was robbed of electronic goods worth over R200 000 last Tuesday. On Monday, shops in the Maponya mall, Soweto, and the Northgate mall were robbed. A group of six men were involved in robbing security guards collecting money from inside the Maponya mall. One of the men fired a shot at the entrance. At Northgate mall, two men forced the manager of the cellphone store into the back office and robbed the store. The iStore at Centurion Mall was robbed of goods worth over R1m on 22 August. On 13 August, the iStore at Cresta mall in Johannesburg was robbed. One person was injured when the gang made their getaway. In all the other robberies nobody was hurt. On Saturday, a G4S security guard was shot dead when four men robbed them of cash they had collected from the Diepkloof Black Chain shopping centre in Soweto.
