Johannesburg - Outgoing Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale must be hauled before a commission of inquiry to account for the collapse of governance in his province, according to the DA. On Tuesday, the party slated Mathale’s redeployment to the National Assembly as an attempt to “keep a crony on the taxpayers’ payroll”. The ANC forced Mathale’s resignation on Monday. His sacking has been welcomed in almost all quarters.“He failed dismally in Limpopo and now it beggars belief what meaningful contribution is he going to make on a national scale,” said DA Limpopo leader Jacques Smalle. He said Mathale should explain why the provincial Roads and Transport Department was used as a cash cow, allegedly to enrich politically connected individuals including Julius Malema. Last year, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, in a report, characterised as unlawful the R52 million contract that the department awarded to On- Point Engineeing in 2009. Malema owned shares in On-Point. Smalle cited the non-delivery of textbooks last year as another blunder. “How did it come about that this provincial department was run into a R2 billion deficit, leading to five departments being placed under administration?” he asked. Smalle also slammed the collapsed public health system. He questioned the ANC’s commitment to clean governance. Iol news
