John 1:29-34 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ 31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.” 32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.” (NKJV) Thursdays with the Disciples How do you know that Jesus is the Son of God? For John, such insight came from encounter. He had met Jesus, even stood in waist-deep water with Him, and at that moment he could see God’s Spirit descend. John knew because he saw God’s Spirit upon Him. There’s something about relationship with God that’s hard to explain. You just know, don’t you? In some private moment, God has stepped into your river, stood close to you, and you could see that He is more than just another guy. He’s really something more. Sure, it’s a bit hard to explain, but that’s the nature of faith. I just know He’s real! One of the most amazing truths about God is His promise to reveal himself to us. He is the God who comes close, who steps into our moments, and demonstrates in unique ways that He is there. Though His presence isn’t visible and sometimes others can’t hear the voice that’s speaking to your heart, you know He’s there and you know that He loves you. You just know… Efforts to prove what you believe can sometimes be difficult, because those who haven’t met Him often hold tightly to reasons not to believe. Every piece of evidence brings an alternative explanation from those not ready to see Him, but you know and no one can rewrite the moment you have lived. That’s the moment where faith springs forth, the kind that changes you forever.
