John Dowland, the great English composer and lutenist of great antiquity, wrote this toward the end of his life in 1610. Yes, 1610. As was typical of the time, the music during this period was sad in nature. Perhaps this had to do with the short life span that people had at the time. Grief is a key emotion of this period. The lute is closely related to the modern day classical guitar, the sound and manner of playing the instrument. enjoy.
