John Eliot Gardiners biography _Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven_ (a gift from Kari Geiger) details J.S. Bachs life, work and contemporaries in his historical setting of 1600s-1700s Germany. Many pieces Gardiner describes are unknown to me. YouTube has been a help. At the link below, the author conducts Christ lay in Deaths Prison (BWV 4, 1707). Bach composed this piece after more than fifteen years of unstinting musical study. Its his audition for a position as organist. He was 22 years old.
