....John Forbes sank his pocket watch in its place and headed for Mr Angus to announce that the other person concerned was too coward to show up in the agreed hour. But no sooner had he taken a few steps ahead than they heard horses trod and shortly after that the contour of three beautiful horses became visible in the dew. Alden with that typically impudent behaviour of his timed his entry precisely and jumped off the saddle wearing a provocative smile. „I’m so ashamed of being late, gents”. „I want to remind you, that you are involved in a gentlemen’s affair. No duel may erase the disgraceful words you made the other night but it is even more intolerable if you are virtually late for it”, remarked Mr Angus hardly concealing his indignation. He was an old-fashioned gentleman who despised the ill-manners of the younger generations. „Pshaw…” „Don’t even start it, please”, Mr Angus forewent Alden’s equivocation. „I’ve known you since childhood, please avoid any offence with showering ridiculous excuses on me. Shall we start then, gentlemen?” Casper obeyed the instruction and approached Mr Angus in order to sort the pistols out between themselves. He only received a sarcastic look from Alden’s green eyes, it flashed pitifully in his direction. He did not care though. Instead he mechanically followed Mr Angus’ instructions to hold his pistol, to count his steps for the agreed distance and he waited for the command word to start the duel. In the meantime he was wondering where to aim to avoid all injuries. Although he was not certain whether he got the due satisfaction without sheding any drops of blood, or Lizzy got it at all, he did not consider sending a bullet right into his brother. What he thought of was as unnecessary and totally misunderstood family loyalty, it became clear almost immediately. As it happened Mr Angus’ command for shooting was shouted exactly at the same hundredth of a second when Alden’s bullet hit him. He did not even have time to go for the trigger, that is the pure random saved Alden from being called a cheater....
