John Pohl Actually "The West" did appease and accommodate Hitler (look at the history from 1933 - 1939, with the annections done by the nazi regime and also the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939). They only changed their political strategy and stopped the appeasement when the Nazis violeted their geo-strategic interests wth the Hitler-Stalin agreement and the annection of half of Poland. In the case of Burma, the western powers want the whole cake, and they try to avoid desintegration of the country, because they want Burma to be a strategic part of their containment strategy against China (building a containment barrier in SE Asia). In this scenario, human rights and ethnic rights (which they long time pretended to support) will take a back seat. In other cases (former Yugoslavia), desintegration was the strategy of choice)
