John had always been a good husband and father. His goal had always been to provide a good home and everything his family needed. He never complained about getting up early and going to work every day. He never needed to because his employer noticed his dedication and provided a comfortable salary for John. That is just what he needed to provide for his dear family. He was a proud man…proud of his family, proud of his accomplishments, proud of the home on Elm Street that he purchased and where he and his family lived in relative comfort and ease. One day he noticed that he didn’t have as much food in the pantry and refrigerator as he thought he should. In fact, he began to realize that their family trips to the grocery store were becoming more and more frequent. And though he could not recall eating the food purchased, it wasn’t in his pantry where he put it. Week after week his food bill went higher and higher. And even higher… How odd! For months upon months this happened until John’s checking account balance diminished so much that John simply had to ask his employer for a raise. He wasn’t able to make ends meet anymore. Unfortunately, though John was his best employee, the employer simply couldn’t afford to give him a raise and remain profitable enough to keep his company running and all of his employees employed. So John went home embarrassed and depressed. Why was this happening to him? He did everything right as far as he could see. He lived respectably with the highest of intentions and standards. He wasn’t wasting his money with vices or frivolous spending. Yet, he just couldn’t understand why he could not provide for his family any longer. Soon, John’s family was on the verge of becoming financially broke. Finally, one day what had been happening all became apparent. John realized that a large family of albino raccoons had taken up residence in his attic. There were dozens upon dozens of raccoons there, silently living in relative ease and comfort. At nights for all those long months they had been sneaking into John’s kitchen and eating his food. Neither John nor his family ever had a clue they were there. So John sought the aid of a pest control specialist to remove the animals and seal up his attic to prevent the raccoons from entering. But the moment he inquired, he was told that these particular raccoons were to be protected because they were endangered and so very rare. He was forbidden to remove them from his attic or to seal it up so that they could no longer come and go from his home. As a result, more raccoons kept seeking a home in his attic. It did, after all, provide a safe place to live with plenty of food in the pantry and refrigerator below. Being an upright man, John complied with the law. But that kept him on the path toward financial ruin. In a short time he no longer had money in his accounts. He no longer had the peace of mind that he was working to provide for his family alone. What is worse is that he no longer could make his mortgage payment. John began to be resentful that all of his esteemed work ethic which had poured into his work to provide for his family was in vain, for the interlopers in the attic benefitted from the rewards of his labors while his own precious family suffered. Then one day, the foreclosure notice came. The mortgage company was simply unwilling to allow John to live in the house without paying his mortgage. Poor old John. So, now there is a “For Sale” sign in the front yard of a vacant home on Elm Street. Tell your friends! It’s a beautiful comfortable looking home that could be great for a small family! Well, it’s vacant of furniture and people. But you really need to like raccoons.
