Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has been ranked 133rd in the 2013 Global ICT Development Index (IDI), with an IDI value of 2.35. The country’s position is a marginal improvement over her rank and score of 135 and 2.14 respectively in 2012. The ICT Development Index (IDI) ranks countries’ performance with regard to ICT infrastructure, use and skills. The 2013 regional ranking placed Nigeria in the 14th position in Africa according to the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) 2014 “Measuring the Information Society Report.” The report reveals that Mauritius ranks 1st in Africa, with an IDI value of 5.22. Seychelles comes 2nd, with an IDI value of 4.97. South Africa (4.42); Cape Verde (4.30); Botswana (4.01) and Ghana (3.46) rank 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. On their parts, Namibia (3.24); Zimbabwe (2.89); Gabon (2.79) and Swaziland (2.66) rank 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th respectively. The report aims to provide an objective international performance evaluation based on quantitative indicators and benchmarks, as an essential input to the ICT policy debate in ITU Member states, the United Nations specialised agency for ICTs says.
