Join Phil Cunliffe from midday on BBC Radio Lancashire as he remembers Blackpool Central Railway Station which closed, controversially fifty years ago. As you can see from these pictures (courtesy of the Bernard Pickard Collection) it was large and busy terminus with no fewer than 14 platforms and an engine shed. When the site was demolished by Blackpool Corporation, some 22 miles of track were ripped up between the station and Waterloo Road. The council wanted to develop the area but half a century later it remains one of the biggest car parks in Europe. You can hear why some people in the resort are still bitter about its closure.
