Jon Hendricks wrote juicy liner notes for this CD edition, which compiles the LHR material for their first (1959) Columbia LP together with five aditional tracks. Among other anecdotes Hendricks tells this one: The original group was a four singers one: Dave Lambert, myself, Annie Ross and her roommate, Georgia Brown (¡!). One day Annie showed up at rehearsal without Georgia. We asked where Georgia was and Annie said that she didnt think she was making it and was pulling out. It was a drag, but thats how we became Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. Some years later, Georgia returned to U.S.A. and I saw her one afternoon in Juniors, a midtown musicians hangout with Gerry Mulligan. After greeting each other I said, Georgia, why did you leave the group? What! she exploded. Leave the group? I never left the group! But Annie said . . . I dont care WHAT Annie said blurted Georgia, obviously very angry. One morning I got up to go to rehearsal and Annie said to me, You know, Georgia, I really think youre wasting Dave and Jons time, cause youre just not makin it - so I just didnt come anymore. But I certainly did NOT leave that group! I loved that group, and always will! Later that night we were gigging at the Village Vanguard, and I confronted Annie: Why did you do that to Georgia? I asked. Do what? asked Annie, as innocent as that comic strip orphan. Tell Georgia she wasnt makin it, I said. Annie stopped fixing her hair in the mirror and turned slowly to face me, a sure sign she smelled trouble. She looked at me for a long minute, obviously debating whether to weave me one of her irresistible fairy tales, or tell me the truth. Opting for the stone truth, and turning slowly back to the mirror and her hairdo, Annie answered, half over her shoulder, I wanted to be the only girl
