Jon and I went out to dinner. We had just got our food and a waiter came walking by asking if anyone knew CPR. It was at the tone like do you need more dressing for your salad? I ask if he was serious because there was not really any urgency in his voice and he said, yes a man was choking. Then I heard never mind, yes he is, no he is not. So I went to the mans table to assess the situation. The man was able to breathe but was covered in sweat, had tried to induce vomiting and unknowingly pushed the food further down (which made it worse and the wait staff gave him water which also made it worse) and he still had food in caught in his throat. I told him how to move the food by tucking his chin and doing a few hard swallows. Lucky for him the food moved the rest of the way down and the emergency was averted. I advised the man to take smaller bites and chew his food sixty chews before swallowing and followed that advice with a wink because no one will chew their food that many times. I told him to use caution eating over the next few days as his throat would be sore. Jon was so excited he got a discount for his dinner for my services. Moral of my story, when someone is in trouble YELL FOR HELP! Or you may be too late. In a CPR class that is the first thing they teach you. If someone is in trouble- Yell for help, then assign someone call 911, then assist the person in need. It is so easy to become CPR certified and who knows when you will need the skills to save a life of a loved one!
