Jonathan Blames Insurgency On Lack Of Education — January 19, 2014 President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that his administration would step up delivery of quality education in the country to eradicate the nation’s problems of terrorism and corruption. The president who spoke as the visitor to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)’s third convocation ceremony held at the National Theatre Complex, Iganmu, Lagos blamed the increasing level of terrorism and corruption in the country on lack of education. Jonathan who was represented at the ceremony by the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike argued that the war against terrorism in the country would be easily won if many people are educated, saying open schools and distant learning would eradicate illiteracy. He said the federal government has concluded plans to establish a commission to coordinate the activities of open schools and distant learning centres in the country. Jonathan urged the private sector to collaborate with the government in funding educational sector in the country, saying the government alone cannot shoulder the responsibly of delivering quality education to the people. Earlier, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe, said the institution in its bid to bring education to the door steps of Nigerians recently established two new study centres in the country. “These are the study centres for the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the special study centres for the Nigeria police. Both centres have already started academic activities. “The National Open University of Nigeria will continue to ensure the attainment of its set objectives which include taking education to the door steps of Nigerians. The university will continue to establish study centres that meet the minimum standards for establishing study centres for organisations, communities and institutions. “The National Open University of Nigeria is happy to announce the establishment of two brand new schools with effect from 2014 academic session. The schools are Schools of Agricultural Science and School of Health Services,” he said. The vice chancellor said the new schools were approved in the blueprint of the university to be established in phases, saying it has also gotten the consent of the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC). Tenebe said the university was in dire need of funds for infrastructural development, academic and Research projects, urging the federal government to increase financial allocation to the school to enable it tackle the various challenges confronting the school. Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar who was named as one of the honourary graduands alongside Professor Grace Alele Williams and Alhaji Ali Kwara who were conferred with Honourary Doctorate Degrees of Science and Letters respectively was absent and did not send anybody to receive the award on his behalf. The development that sent many tongues waggling made the university authority to announce openly at the ceremony that it has deferred the award.
