Jonathan donates $3m to Ebola-hit West African nations Nigeria’s President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has donated $3 million in support of three West African countries that are being challenged by the deadly Ebola disease. The donation came on the heels of the establishment of a Solidarity Fund by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra on Thursday to help fight the scourge that has claimed about 500 lives in Guinea, Sierra Lone and Liberia. A breakdown of Nigeria’s contribution shows that $1 million will go Guinea; $500,000 to Sierra Leone; $500,000 to Liberia and $1 million to the ECOWAS Pool Fund for Ebola. Nigeria’s donation was contained in a communiqué read by the President of EOWAS Commission, Kadre Desire Quedraogo, at the end of the 45th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State of ECOWAS in Accra. In view of the serious threat posed by the Ebola disease, the Authority also directed the Commission to collaborate with the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO) in order to adopt a regional approach to containing and managing the disease. The ECOWAS Commission has also appealed to the heads of government and the international community to contribute to the fund in order to facilitate their collective efforts to defeat the epidemic.
