Jono Wood | The Park Opening tonight | 18:00 Rubixcube Gallery | 264 Fox Street | Arts on Main Exhibition runs from 30 Jan to 23 Feb. The Park offers a peephole into the underbelly of Johannesburgs inner city. Hillbrow has long been maligned as a place for the desperate and drug addled, largely overlooked by the citys middle class. This is Hillbrow presents a sober look at the individuals who are living the story of this notorious suburb. Poverty and deprivation exhibited alongside grit and determination. A view of societys forgotten, searching for a voice. Whilst the exhibition is comprised of Wood’s photography, the project itself takes the shape of a larger anthropological study - facilitated by Nickolaus Bauer who gives regular guided walks through Hillbrow - and as such all images were shot on black and white film on location against a white background. The Artist: Jono Wood, has been a fine art photographer since 2008. Tiring of corporate and advertorial work, Wood is finding expression through projects aimed at revealing the truth of South African society. His talent has been recognised with bronze, silver and gold commendations at the Sony Pro Photo Awards in 2009 and 2010, and finalist spot at the 2009 Loeries. The Journalist: Nickolaus Bauer, has been a journalist since 2006 straddling both the broadcast and print industry. His objective is to fight ignorance and pessimism by telling stories that offer balance and perspective to South African society; finding hope in embracing diversity and dispair is his mission. His work was awarded in 2012 with a Sikuvile Journalism award for multimedia.
