Jose Greco put Flamenco on the map. He made it popular. he was on the Ed Sullivan Show many times. Followed by Antonio and Rosario and lets not forget the incredible Carmen Amaya! To say nothing of Vicente Escudero, the giant among giants. How do I know this stuff?? Haha. Because my uncle had his own Flamenco dance company and I learned the art of Flamenco dancing, castanets, heel work etc. after many years of ballet. I went on tour with him as his partner when I was fifteen back in the fifties in New York where I grew up. Btw....Jose Greco was Italian from Brooklyn, just like my uncle, Felipe Lanza. Nothing like Flamenco dance. Riveting. There are so many dances. This is the Farucca. Then you have the Sevillianas, the Zapateado, Goyescas, the Jota, etc. each having its own style and rhythm patterns. Always accompanied by guitar and singer. Juan de Triana was a great singer. The singing was as virtuoso as the dancing. So passionate. So romantic and sensual. Tango maybe, maybe compares but more subtle. I miss those days. I studied privately with Maraquita Flores from Argentina in New York with a guitarist accompanying the lessons. I would take the subways from Brooklyn to 56 th street studio in Manhattan once a week to get every ounce of training in Flamenco that I could. Well, that was a wonderful chapter in my life. This is why I say life is long, not short. Keep exploring and go BIG! Love to all!
