Josef Coresh Study on Kidney Disease Rates Prompts New Testing Recommendations from the National Kidney Foundation The National Kidney Foundation, in a major shift, is now recommending that all patients age 60 and above get annual tests for kidney disease. The recommendation is based on research conducted by a team helmed by Josef Coresh, G.W. Comstock Professor and Director of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Comstock Center, that found that six out of 10 Americans will develop kidney disease in their lifetime. Kidney disease rates have been increasing in recent decades, but this is the first study that measured the extent of it. The study was published today in the Journal of Kidney Disease. This finding, which Koresh says might be on the conservative side, puts the risk of kidney disease ahead of the risk of heart disease, diabetes or late-stage cancer. The new recommendation for annual kidney testing applies to 50 millions Americans. Past recommendations did not consider age a risk factor. Josef Coresh discusses his findings in this video.
