Josef Lhévinnes legendary January 6, 1936 account of Chopins Polonaise in A-Flat Major Op.53. There are louder, faster, and flashier performances that have been committed to disc in the intervening decades, but for elegance, nobility, refinement, and overall musicality, this remains one of the all-time great recordings of the work. Lhévinne was famous for his octaves (I met one of his students a few years ago and she said you couldnt imagine how amazing his octaves were) and he does indeed play with remarkable evenness of clear tone and articulation, with a musically applied technical facility.
