A Fulfilled (un)Political man JoseLito was a reluctant politician, being at the time uninitiated in the profession it was his older brother Antonio who had been nudged into politics, albeit reluctantly too that was surprising because politics had been in the family, with several of their relative having served in municipal position in Floridablanca, pampnga Antonio was elected municipal councilor in the mid-1960s.He was a Quiet man people in their town had a soft heart for him. He went to school in sanbeda in manila and played varsity basketball there (his son Jeffrey would later also play on the same school’s varsity team while Jeffrey’son AJ Today plays for university of perpetual help he became close friends with the Laxa Clan of Macabebe and worked with them in the profitable tagalong II and Ilang movies production company of star Tony Ferrer and older brother Espiridion Laxa Ferrer to this day calls Antonio “Family” ( they’re distant relatives, a relationship made even closer by interlocking in – law links) it was said that the then mayor of Floridablanca had suggested to Antonio that he run for mayor in the next Elections. but fate intervened and Antonio suffered a fatal aneurisym in the 1969 at the age of 32. The FLoridablanca Municipal Council awarded him a posthumous “Councilor of the year”citation. The Torch passed to joselito, still in his 20s at the time.the people around the family urged joselito,”Tito” to all, to take up from where Antonio had left off in Politics. After a lot of Soul-searching, he decided to test the waters and depth and sincerity of the people’s Support. He thought of a project that would both test the political waters as well as lauch an initiative that would leave a lasting mark in their community.he was started a drive to create a separate barangay from existingone where their family lived. And he wanted the new barangay named after his Brother,Antonio V.Coronel He sponsored the municipal council resolution and filed the required documents at the Phillipine congress. Meantime, there was resistance to the initiative among the people in the existing barangay, some of whom, ironically, were long time friends of Antonio.and others who were new to the barangay.they were envious of the prospective honor to be bestowed on Antonio and the Coronel family. But Joselito’sGallant efforts finally paid off and the municipal council and the congress approved the creation of a new barangay.Because the resisters didn’t want to give full recognition and glory to the name of Antonio, the compromise solution was to name the barangay San Antonio. (there’s a street named after him in the barangay. Actually,it was a win – win result for Antonio and Joselito’s family because thet did succeed in th carving out a new barangay San Antonio. The place needed a chapel but earlier efforts by other organizers to build one had been unsuccessful. Barangay elders approached him to try anew to have a chapel built. The project needed Funding. Joselito approached friends and other possible sources. He sought the help of his long-time mentor and ally, Architect Anastacio Bernal. To draw up the chapel’s blueprint (bernal, to draw up the chapel’s blueprint (bernal would go on to become possibly the best nte Rivero, a native of Floridablanca, donated the court’s goalpost. (Incidentally,Rivero is listed in Wikipedia as a notable FLORIDABLANCAN, along with retired Justice Carmelino Alvendia and a certain Journalist. A younger brother of Joselito, who writes a column called “Ergo” mayor of lubao town in Pampanga best in the he didn’t steal from the town’sFinances). After a lot of perseverance, JoseLito Succeeded in having the chapel built.Other projects,Like a basketball court, were built in the barangay through Joselito’s Efforts. Actor Da JOSELITO would go on to be Elected Like this Brother Antonio,a town a councilor.he helped successful local politicians in their campaigns, including current FLORIDABLANCA MAYOR ED GUERRERO who,now on this third term, has himself shown Political Durability. Joselito Reminisces today about the struggles of yesteryears, including the martial-law period (he wanted to carry a cross on his shoulders from Floridablanca To manila as his protest against martial law but was dissuaded by his advisers).he Continues to be a keen student of national and Global politics (the first thing he does in the morning is to drive to the town plaza to buy the newspaper), and reads a lon international affairs. but he’s most proud of his contribution to barangay San Antonio, especially building the chapel and a basketball court, and continuing to enjoy the support of his barangay mates, as well as serving a mentor to aspiring politicians in his town. JOSELITO “TITO” CORONEL, an initially reluctant politician, feeling fulfilled after beating formidable Odds.
