Joseph Caver Daniel Haulman William Chivalette Before Bullard & the Tuskegee Airmen: [1911] Charles Ward Chappelle was an inventor, architect and aircraft engineer who invented an aircraft that was displayed at the First Industrial Aero Show. The Aero Show was held in conjunction with the International Automobile Show at New Yorks Grand Central Palace; Chappelle was the only Black person to have taken part as an exhibitor. Chappelle’s exhibit featured the aircraft he had invented and built. Chappelles aircraft garnered the crowd’s special attention, because of the safety device Chappelle had installed for long distance flights. Chappelle’s unique aircraft was scheduled for an extended display at the New York, headquarters of the United States Aeronautical Reserve located on 5th Avenue. Chappelle had become interested in aviation in 1910 and as a result joined the New York chapter of the United States Aeronautical Reserve.
