Joseph Goebbles made a famous statement about the ‘Big Lie’, but it is rarely quoted in full. So here it is: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” Sadly that is exactly what is happening in this country right now. Even the lies are the same: ‘The economic chaos and poverty is caused by a previous administration and by foreigners who are sucking the lifeblood out of the country. They are dangerous parasites who want to take over and inflict their laws upon us. They want to change our national identity into theirs. They are also a different breed from you and I.’ ‘The poor are only poor because they are idle. There is work for everyone, but they would rather sit around doing nothing or creating more than enough children, living off the generosity of the State.’ ‘The sick and disabled are a burden on the State who should be made either to work or to live without complaint and within their means.’ ‘Unions are deliberately fooling their members into damaging strikes which are designed to lead to the destruction of everything we hold dear.’ And so it goes on – a series of lies which together make up that one Big Lie – that there are scapegoats out there we can rightly blame for everything which the State is gleefully doing to us. Then you get the Media to join in, spreading the lies every day, either for idealogical reasons, like Murdoch’s empire which seeks backdoor political power; or because they know hatred sells, like the Daily Mail. Then you ensure dissent is clamped down on. Curb the power of the Unions. Make as many strikes as possible illegal. Bring in draconian anti-terrorist laws which allow imprisonment without trial or even charge. Spy on ordinary people’s communications. Make it impossible for them to receive legal aid. When there is visible dissent, ensure it is not reported upon in the Mainstream Media. This Government has been phenomenally successful in spreading this Big Lie, to the extent that the greater part of their support comes from the very people they are lying to – the people they have deliberately plunged into poverty. Make no mistake, the reason for this Big Lie is to take this country back to a time when the working classes knew their place and did as they were told so the rich and powerful could become ever more rich and powerful with their labour. They have watched with dismay the creation of Unions, the Labour Party, workers rights, the Welfare State, the NHS, the minimum wage – all those things which have lifted ordinary people out of squalor, grinding poverty and a short life – and are fighting back with everything they’ve got. If they win the next election because so many people believe their lies, we can only look forward to a complete return to Victorian hardship. Because they won’t stop this time until they have finished the job. Remember – Truth is the greatest enemy of the State. Spread it wherever you can. Argue it with passion but without malice. Insist your politicians shout it from the rooftops. Insults don’t hurt them – they are much too thick-skinned for that – but Truth does.
